Here I received something completely different than what I usually find in my mailbox or email inbox.
The new album by the band SURALIN from Chemnitz is described as an album that reduces everything to the essentials. Indie-Alternative is the genre in which the band is categorized.
I personally see not only Indie-Alternative sound but also influences of dreamy, atmospheric wave sound. Somehow, Dream-Pop comes to mind as well, but that’s probably my own definition, which has nothing to do with music journalism classifications. I mention this because the melodic arcs and the sometimes very gentle play of the instruments relax me and let me dream.
The band itself wants to see this album more as a counter-proposal to dreaming or even giving up. I picked up the term 'positive despair' from the promotional sheet. Sounds good, but does it make logical sense?
The music of the four Chemnitz musicians definitely sticks in your ear. Considering that they recorded the songs live in the studio, everything sounds extremely organic and cohesive. It’s a type of music that allows me to downshift, to surrender to the songs to a certain extent. While it is indeed rock, it is played (and/or produced) so gently and softly that it feels really good. A feel-good album that doesn’t want to be a feel-good album?!
“Nothing is the News“ by SURALIN is definitely worth a listen.
It doesn’t always have to be the soundtrack to a street battle.
The album will be released only digitally or on vinyl.
