I didn't have to think long when the event was announced.
Having only heard positive things about Ruts DC from the previous year, this time Plan B and the subsequent Teenage Kicks Party were added to the mix. So off to SO 36.....
To my shame, I must admit that I hardly caught anything from Plan B, as I had to wait for someone outside and ended up meeting a few acquaintances there.
Engrossed in conversations, time flew by, and I really only caught the last few songs from Plan B, who were also celebrating their 30th band anniversary here.
So I can't write much about the whole gig of the guys unfortunately.
I really liked their cover of the Undertones song "Teenage Kicks" and the newer "Grab It" from 2012 is also one of my favorites.
The atmosphere was great, and in any case, Plan B was well received by the audience, celebrated by them and only released after several encores.

After a short changeover, the main act of the evening started:
Ruts DC. Like for many others that night, the Ruts are also an important part of the hit list for the soundtrack of my youth.
Who didn't dance or pogo to "Babylons Burning" back then?

From the Ruts of that time, today's Ruts DC trio includes drummer Dave Ruffy and bassist and singer Segs Jennings. The third member is guitarist Leigh Heggarty, who is truly beyond any doubt in his playing.

Ruts D.C. started their set with the reggae tracks "Whatever We Do," followed by "Mighty Soldier." Then they continued with a mix of old Ruts songs like "Backbiter, Sus, Babylons Burning" and tracks from more recent times, all of which cater to the reggae vibe. The sound has unfortunately given cause for criticism during my long "career" at SO36. But on this evening, the sound was absolutely top-notch. Clearly defined, not too loud, clear bass, crystal-clear guitar, vocals present.....top !!!
After three encores and the final song "Society," where they really gave it their all, it was unfortunately over. As far as I'm concerned, the guys could have easily played a few more songs.

In any case, Ruts DC completely convinced me that evening, and the feedback I heard about the gig afterward echoed the same sentiment. And it could once again be noted that sometimes less can indeed be more in music.

Immediately following Ruts, the second part of the evening began: The Teenage Kicks Party.
Originally initiated by Martina and Nopper (also a "veteran" of the Berlin scene) through a Facebook group as a platform for the old West Berlin punk and new wave scene (Musichall, Linientreu, Dschungel), the first party under the motto "Teenage Kicks" soon took place. By now, the party series has established itself, and that evening marked the 10th party under this name. I believe that at the time when this music first saw the light of day, it was still called Feté....

For all those who love old-school punk, new wave, ska, etc. from that time, there is probably no better address than the Teenage Kicks Party.
Many people from the scene have also reconnected here and in the aforementioned Facebook group, some of whom had lost touch for over 30 years. I have also had the pleasure of experiencing this. You can think what you want about Facebook, but such things would simply not be possible without platforms like FB.

Even though some younger fans had found their way to SO36, the average age of the visitors was still somewhat higher.
And so the crowd enjoyed songs that are likely the soundtrack of their youth for a large part of the audience. The right mix was provided by DJs Iggy Nop, Vossy, Herr Roloff, and Chaos Peace.
The music was excellently chosen, although a few more tracks could have been added. But for that, the party would probably have to go 24/7...

I had a really great time. All of this together with some old companions with whom I had made a name for myself over 30 years ago in a city called West Berlin and its punk and new wave clubs.
I think this is a fantastic thing. It brings many people, who had lost touch completely, back together. And you meet new people, whom you often assume you should actually know.….

A wonderful evening with great bands and fantastic music, awesome guys at the turntables, and many completely relaxed people in the still great SO36 after 36 years!
The next Teenage Kicks Party is already announced for November 8, 2014, at Magnet Club. This time, the Undertones will be guests!
