The journey there, however, cost me some nerves. A metal wreck blocked the A9. Of course, caused by all the Oktoberfest pilgrims heading to the Wies'n. I wouldn't want to know how many of them ended up drunk, peeing themselves, and throwing up, or wanted to hook up on the grassy hill but couldn't get their "little Bavarians" up anymore. Cheers! If you're one of those party voyeurs, you should check out http://www.muenchenkotzt.de/. ;)
No thanks! The Rülps in Kirchheim offered something much better.
When I arrived, I could already see the first leather jackets with their colorful mohawks. Very nice. The entrance is a bit hidden. You go down some stairs into a narrow courtyard. It was already packed with all sorts of riffraff. I first went backstage to do the interview, and there was Wastl from the Dorks, lounging around and eating his soup. He asked if I wanted some too and mentioned that the others were outside.
On the table, there were three huge pots of soup. Fish soup, curry soup, and goulash soup. But this was not just any dish. It was a 5-star dish! Served, of course, in style on plastic plates. The fish soup blew my mind. It was a flavor orgasm. How awesome was that? The Dorks must know a 5-star chef who is also active in the scene and apparently likes the Dorks. Additionally, Denni from Schrobenhausen had three crates of Dorks beer brewed. That's how the scene has always worked. Everyone contributes and gets something back in return. Unfortunately, there isn't much of that activism left today.
Then I grabbed Denni, and we retreated backstage to do an interview with the band. You can read it here: (Coming soon) ;) We missed Umluft 180° because of that. They are an 80s revival punk band from Munich. When I arrived, I caught a bit of their soundcheck. I initially thought they were a bunch of old geezers over 50, but they seem to be quite young. It's a matter of taste whether you like museum music, but if it’s fun, that’s okay.
I caught about the middle of Analkommando's set.
The Oberpfälzers are no longer strangers in the scene. I've seen them several times now and must say they deliver a solid performance. German punk with loads of fun. Quite fast and melodic, and occasionally cool ska parts were thrown in, beautifully carried by the bass. The whole thing was compact and powerful, and the atmosphere in the audience was already fantastic. Pogo, beer, and everyone in party mood.
Then it continued with Bums. The old German punkers from Eislingen in Baden-Württemberg. The place was slowly filling up, and they kicked off with "Vollzugsanstalt". Denni was already swaying a bit as a guest singer on stage, and in front of the stage, a crowd had formed, loudly singing along to the band's lyrics with raised fists. Behind them, a bustling pogo knot. Occasionally, a phone was found, or beer sprayed across the room. Just how it goes. The band played all their hits like "1,2,3, lasst die Leute frei", "Wie lange wollt ihr das mit ansehen", "Punkrock, Hanf & Bier", or "Räumt auf". It had real power, and I wondered if the Dorks could top that.
They then came on stage right after in the swimwear from the cover of the new album "Duschen auf Staatskosten". They looked funny in their modest striped full-body swimsuits and bright yellow swim caps. Now it was packed, and no one was lingering outside or in the bathroom anymore. The atmosphere in the club was charged, and the Dorks kicked off with the title track of the new record. Lizal's voice always impresses me, especially how intensely she delivers the lyrics. It continued with "Dreckige Saat", and during that song, I got goosebumps. That hasn't happened to me in a long time. Wow, that was awesome! The band was excellently rehearsed, and especially the new songs are musically very interesting. Personally, I am a huge fan of the Dorks' dual vocal solos. That's the influence of Iron Maiden, and the songs are very well thought out. ;)
The sing-along factor with the Dorks is enormous. Everywhere, raised fists and a knowledgeable audience. At least for the well-known pieces. The rest was, I believe, the entire new album. Half the place was pogoing, and occasionally you could see an older punk staggering out of the mob, completely exhausted because his stamina had let him down.
Of course, the Pants-Free Resistance was also celebrated in between, and the audience dropped their pants. Later, two or three guys stood naked in front of the stage. Pants-free deluxe, so to speak. ;)
The Dorks set off a true fireworks display of hits. An hour and a half of Dorks, and it never got boring. Comic artist Donald, officially the sixth Dork, made his appearance as a "singer" during Photosynthesis, if you can call it that. ;-) The finale was the brilliant cover of Iron Maiden's "Fear of the Dark", which the Dorks call "4 von den Dorks". Confusing because there are actually 5 Dorks. But in the interview, I learned that only 4 are Maiden fans. As an encore, they then played their mega hit "Echte Assis".
I must say, I haven't seen such an awesome concert in a long time.
The atmosphere was fantastic, which, as mentioned, is partly due to the great songs and partly because the Dorks are deeply rooted in the scene and, unlike many other bands, have not lost the thread to the people. The next day, the second act of the Assis follows. After the headquarters in Bavaria was delighted, it was off to the branch in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
Frank, over to you! ;)
p.s. Photos were taken by Schromm from Switzerland, who came to Munich especially for the Dorks. I talked to him at the merch stand because my photos always turn out terrible. ;)
