I've been listening to Stiff Little Fingers since their first album "Inflammable Material", yet I've never seen the band live. So it was definitely time to finally make up for that, even though only guitarist and singer Jake Burns and bassist Ali McMordie (back since 2006) are still part of the original lineup. Steve Grantley and Ian McCallum are on drums and second guitar.

Arriving a bit late plus delays at the entrance meant that I unfortunately only caught the last two songs of the support band "Fightball" from Berlin. And that from a great distance from the stage. Because after the door to the interior of SO36 opened, it was already impossible to move forward. The house was sold out and consequently packed.
Therefore, I don't want to presume to judge Fightball's performance based on just two songs.
Although the two songs I heard from afar really sounded quite good. Sorry guys, I'll make it up to you at the next opportunity.

The break was then used to fight my way through the crowd to the front. Once I arrived in the front stage area, it didn't take long for the SLF show to begin. SLF kicked off after the intro with the classic "Wasted Life", followed immediately by "Just Fade Away". The sound was absolutely fantastic from the start, crystal clear and not unbearably loud. Unfortunately, there are still bands that think that 10db more improves the quality of their performance.
The crowd was pogoing like crazy, and I decided that when a completely drunk fellow concert-goer threatened to serve me his lunch on my feet, I would save myself with a well-timed jump onto the side platform.

Next was the song "When We Were Young" from the current album "No Going Back", which I also consider to be the best track on the record. Not necessarily the hardcore pogo number, but the feeling of the song along with the lyrics is absolutely great in my opinion. Singer Jake Burns still knows how to impress vocally. It comes from the gut and is almost always spot on tonally at 100%.

However, the mood of the previously mentioned was briefly dampened during the next song after he was hit on the head with a full beer cup and got nicely showered. He looked less than pleased about it and threatened to end the concert as a penalty if it happened again. Mhhhh?.... I wasn't quite sure what to make of that. Such things used to be more common at concerts, but back then there was also an emperor. It's really unfortunate to be drenched in beer at the beginning of the set, and the guitar is already suffering from it too. It shouldn't really be like that....
But as a musician, you have to expect such things and handle them with composure. (Note: A certain Henry Rollins threatened to smash a spectator with a microphone stand at the same venue after a similar incident in 1983....)
Back to the music: After "Nobody's Hero", six songs from the band's newer phases followed. During "My Dark Places", Jake Burns gave a brief discussion about the content, where he talked about his difficult life phase with depression, which inspired the motivation for this title. Finally, the old numbers that many were surely expecting came, until the regular set ended with "Suspect Device".
As an encore, there were "Johnny Was", "At the Edge", and "Alternative Ulster", where the SO36 was really going wild.

I might have wished for one or two more songs from the first two albums. But on the other hand, time hasn't stood still, and it's great that these, my old heroes, are still active and producing new material.

A great concert with an amazing atmosphere and a band that was absolutely convincing in their performance!
