Welt.de All of Germany is to turn off the lights
On December 8th, all lights in Germany are to go out for five minutes. Environmental organizations and media companies are calling for this as a reminder for more climate protection. The residents of Los Angeles had already responded to a similar call at the end of October.
The climate protection cooperation "Save Our Earth" from BILD, BUND, Greenpeace, and WWF, together with Google and ProSieben, is calling for a nationwide action on December 8, 2007: "Lights out! For our climate." From 8:00 PM to 8:05 PM, lights across the country are to be turned off for five minutes. The action is intended as a reminder calling for more climate protection both nationally and internationally.
With the action "Lights out! For our climate," the organizers are urging each individual to take action. It is also meant as a sign to the World Climate Summit taking place simultaneously in Bali, to commit to better climate protection measures.
Everyone can participate: all households in Germany, as well as cities, municipalities, companies, clubs, and organizations. Participants can turn off facade, room, landscape, or Christmas lights. Necessary safety lighting, such as street or emergency lighting, should remain on.
Initial commitments have already been made. For example, the Cologne Cathedral, Neuschwanstein Castle, Heidelberg Castle, the Alte Oper, and the "Zeil" in Frankfurt will turn off their exterior lighting for five minutes. ProSieben will report live on the action on December 8th – which will require electricity again.
