A DEER A HORSE will release their second album on September 27, 2024.
The album is said to be musically very diverse. There are influences from metal, punk, industrial, and stoner rock.
From the very first song, it is clear that this is something entirely unique.
The first song "Beehive" is almost disturbing both stylistically and vocally, and it continues in this vein. Crooked industrial tones, fierce metal guitars, and a voice that is supposedly delivered by just one person, namely bassist Angela Phillips. I've heard a lot about what can be done with one's voice, but Angela shows that much more is possible. Angry singing, screaming, gentle lines, shrieking, wailing... then again almost poppy, soft, and sugary lines. How does Angela manage that? And above all, how will this be implemented live?
Isn't a whole army of technology necessary, or is Angela Phillips a rare vocal wonder? I am definitely surprised at how this works even after multiple listens.
A DEER A HORSE have created a work with "Texas Math" that, in my opinion, is something special and will probably never find a huge audience.
Too specific, too unusual with too many styles and tempo changes, and always that extraordinary voice.
I have to honestly say that "Texas Math" isn't really for me.
However, I must acknowledge that the band manages to maintain their style throughout the entire album, which is not easy listening.
In spring 2025, the band will come to Germany for concerts. Those who appreciate the special and the extraordinary should give A DEER A HORSE a try and give the band a chance.
