So Det has lured me into his spacious Ramtatta boat as he can make little to no sense of the latest releases in the German punk sector! Of course, I gladly accepted, but as a text fetishist, I was already tearing apart the contents of the new releases in my mind. Well, cheers to that... Shortly thereafter, the first package arrived - and I had luck on my side! The very prolific Nix Gut label sent only re-releases of classics. First up was the long sold-out debut album by 1.Mai'87 from 1994. Although "Creatures in the Body" is considered a German punk milestone of the 90s, the record somehow never found its way into my CD shelf. Strange... Right from the start of the CD, it becomes clear what kind of band 1.Mai'87 was: experimental, musically above average, looking beyond the punk horizon, lyrically unembarrassed, and featuring a very present singer! The standout songs are "Crackhead", "Fully into Germany", "Fear", and especially the track "Fully Proll", which deals with the elements of our scene that only think about booze and chaos. There’s really nothing to add to that song! A few of the twelve "Creatures in the Body" songs, however, don’t blow me away; they come off as a bit boring. As a bonus, the songs from the first demo tape "Wunsch ist Wunsch" follow (including "They March Again", "They Punish You with Lies") as well as an absolutely terrible live song recorded with a dictaphone(!). The older bonus songs are stricter punk, clearly political/socially critical, and can excite me similarly to the strong parts of the regular album. The rumbling live song at the end can be overlooked since it’s only 1:28 minutes long, and above all, the entire album should not be missing from any comprehensive German punk collection!
