It is probably easier to tear down the west of the country than to build up the east. And the fun factor is likely to be much greater as well. These thoughts must have crossed the minds of the founders of "Abriss West" when they formed the band in 2000 in a quaint small town called Auerbach in the Saxon Vogtland. The band's history up to today can simply be reduced to a few words. Four non-musicians who wanted to start a band. -> Random assignment of instruments with a later rotation principle. -> Frequent changes of rehearsal space due to noise pollution. -> Four became five. -> 2002 first CD "Willkommen im Land der Freiheit" -> Five became six. -> 2003 second CD "Aufstand".
Now we are in the year 2005, no new personnel has been added, and the final lineup seems to have been found. From this year, I now have the "current" album "Kontrollfunktion" in front of me, which I would like to inspect a bit more closely.
This is a true D.I.Y. production, completely without a label. Not even a barcode on the cover, and so the CD is not available in any mail order or store. Real punk rock!
Fortunately, the sound quality is not as bad as one might suspect, even though they opted out of mastering.
What is offered here is old-school punk rock with German lyrics, which sometimes comes across as a bit clumsy. However, one could also express it positively and say it is rather "experimental." ;-)
The lead guitar could rock a bit more, in my opinion. What I absolutely love is the alternating vocals of Mario and Hoff, which strongly remind me of the good old days of BLUT + EISEN. Throughout the album, there is a hint of iconic 80s D-punk.
One absolute strength of this band is the lyrics; they really have something to say, and it’s worth listening closely. One song addresses the division of the left into anti-imperialists and anti-Germans. While the left fights among themselves, the fascists gather underground.
All the lyrics have a socially critical and political message, but without becoming slogan-like. Fortunately, you won't find any stupid drinking songs here. This makes the band immediately likable to me.
My conclusion: This band deserves more attention!
I hope to see the band live in Kölle someday, preferably at a cozy trailer concert with a fire barrel. (Niels from punkstelle.de for RamTatTa)
