Almost two years ago, Black Cab released a much-noticed album with “Altamont Diary,” which was meant to be a reminiscence of the events at the Rolling Stones concert in 1969; at that time, the Stones' management wanted to create a kind of counterpart to Woodstock at the Altamont Speedway, an old racetrack near San Francisco. However, the Hells Angels, hired as security, killed an audience member while the Stones were performing “Under my Thumb” on stage – Altamont went down in history as the end of “the innocence of the hippie movement” (Wikipedia). This brief excursion is permitted because anyone listening to the current CD by Black Cab might not believe that the hippies have died out: sitar sounds, songwriter ballads, handclap choruses, tabla choirs – in short: SpaceNoise and Psychedelic…. No, I don't want anyone to think that I'm belittling this – in short: quite extraordinary – CD to “hippie nonsense” – the references to the Flower Power era are unavoidable; if he were still with us, George Harrison could have been pulling the strings, and Brian Wilson was definitely there, at least in spirit… What can I say: absolutely, absolutely great!
