I have often sat in my life with a music magazine in hand on the toilet, reading reviews of bands I neither knew nor had ever heard or read about. In these reviews, the word "Emocore" would often appear, and I never knew what to make of this term. Emocore. What the hell is that? It seems everyone knows it and either hates or loves it. Now I have listened to "Neon Nights" by the 6 Austrians, and thanks to the Bob Andrews in me, I believe I now know that I have just heard 11 well-produced Emocore songs. Sometimes you see those alternative music shows where skateboarding is happening, and in the background, there’s always some punky music playing. Emocore sounds somewhat like that, with the difference that in Emocore, there’s a bit of screaming in between (or even during) the clean singing. If you Google DEFCON, comparisons to DAYS IN GRIEF or FIRE IN THE ATTIC are drawn. I only knew those from my toilet reading, and that surely won’t change. Fans of the comparison bands are encouraged to listen to DEFCON on their MySpace page and form their own opinion.
