First of all, a big shout-out and great respect to MY DEFENSE from Cologne. The cover is hand-sprayed, giving it not only an authentic DIY style but also fitting perfectly into the band's concept. They are still completely independent, doing everything themselves, and this record is released entirely through self-distribution.
“Make a Choice“ is the fourth CD of the hardcore band, which has been around since 2005 and keeps getting better year after year.
The production of the six songs is consistently very well done. There is power behind it. The complex and captivating melodies are very well crafted. The many breaks and tempo changes, combined with the occasionally two-part vocals, can make you feel almost dizzy while listening.
This reminds me of old-school hardcore. The old stuff from 5BUGS in Berlin was similar. However, this band has not succumbed to the sound of the masses. This is unlikely to happen to MY DEFENSE anytime soon. Not only is the music here incompatible with the sound of the masses, but also because the lyrics do not deal with the lost love of a 16-year-old.
MY DEFENSE is about the bigger picture. All six songs are political, socially critical, yet very empathetic and compassionate. The songs do not leave you indifferent. They shake you up. Whether the lyrics or the sound grabs you first, you will definitely be captivated. There's no other way.
MY DEFENSE can pair great melodies with very good lyrics. Not many can do that. It is all the more incomprehensible that this band has not yet found a label.
MY DEFENSE can instill fear in some more well-known bands with their sound. “MAKE A CHOICE“ is a fantastic hardcore EP!! This is how hardcore should be!
