A few days ago, a conspiratorial letter arrived for me, containing the self-titled debut album by MARY´S KIDS. Girl punk from Sweden, who are said to be comparable to the Donnas and are supposed to be really cool.
The Donnas are certainly not a bad reference, and good bands have always come from Scandinavia (the band hails from Oslo and Stockholm).
In fact, the sound of MARY´S KIDS is really great and forward-driving. Fast melodic punk rock is combined with the sound of '77 and garage, plus a touch of kick-ass rock. The result is a fiery mix that hits hard and can impress musically with every song. Listening to it definitely reminds me of the Donnas but also of the Berlin punk band APC, if anyone still remembers them.
The vocals by Mary Curie are angry and engaged but never shrill or overly loud. Care was taken not to ruin the sound with a dreadful female voice. This isn't hard, as singer and guitarist Mary Curie has gathered several years of experience on punk stages around the world. She used to perform with Mensen. That band is history, but MARY´S KIDS are not!!
MARY´S KIDS consistently impress and really make you want to see the band live. It should be quite a show. In October and November 2010, everyone has the opportunity to see the band, as they will be touring through Germany.
