“Swingtime is good time, good time is better time“.
This statement comes from the novel “Fleisch ist mein Gemüse“ by Heinz Strunk.
The statement served as an announcement for singer Gurki whenever there was a need for high spirits in the village beer tent.
Now, swing is much more than entertainment for drunken village proles who want to let loose once a year. Recently, swing has been rediscovered. So what could be more fitting than to release a sampler to introduce swing to even more people? And who could do that better than the label Wolverine Records, which has released samplers on almost all topics and styles?
A full twenty songs provide the complete spectrum of swing. The compilation is very successful, as it presents various bands and projects and shows how multifaceted swing can be and which styles have been influenced by swing or have influenced swing. It starts with jazz, goes through rock'n'roll, and ends with driving punk. Thus, “Swing's not dead“ is more than just a mere collection of bands; it is rather a diverse and entertaining snapshot of the current swing scene. Especially the songs performed in German stand out with their wit and charm upon first listen.
With this sampler, Wolverine Records has created a truly beautiful compilation that remains enjoyable even after multiple listens. And now I'm going to look for a proper dance school so I can make a good impression at the next dance tea.
