VOGELFREI from Torgau on the Elbe have completely passed me by despite their long band history. I still have an old concert ticket lying around that announces a band called Vogelfrai. Well, they have nothing to do with the band from Torgau, and I have my issues with this record.
The CD is now playing for the third time in my player, and I can't connect with the album at all. The music, nice catchy rock, isn't even that bad. The production is also well done. Based on the cover and not knowing the band, I expected a heavily produced rough (German) rock album. The production is very restrained compared to the styles just mentioned. It sounds almost classically analog.
So in that sense, everything is quite sympathetic.
Let's talk about the lyrics, which are the big problem.
Man, this is so pathetic. Does it have to be like this? Probably, because all the songs are like that, with the ballads being particularly bad. It all sounds like wannabe and suburban rock and pop music. Yes, pop music. Not in terms of melodies, but the lyrics...
Oh man, this is really tough stuff.
It might be excusable that the band actually consists of just one person who is psychologically processing their life, dreams, and longings here.
When it comes to the lyrics, I can somewhat think of Broilers. The difference, however, is that Broilers are still cool and have attitude despite everything.
VOGELFREI has...nothing.
VOGELFREI might appeal to the middle-class suburban rocker, but anyone living in the city will get screaming cramps from this.
