Five years, my God, it's been five years since I last heard anything from "THE SAINTE CATHERINES". Back then, they were still with FAT WRECK REC, releasing the killer album "Dancing for Decadance" which came with super fast and gritty punk rock tracks.
And today, five years older and more mature? Indeed. The melodies come out of the speakers more anthemic and melodic. Somewhat even a bit more commercial, which I personally find a bit unfortunate. But despite everything, it's still an album that is fun to listen to.
Mid-tempo tracks that encourage you to constantly hum along to the melodies or loudly sing along when the occasion allows. What is particularly noteworthy is that the voice of frontman HUGO does not drift into a watered-down version and has maintained its aggression.
Songs like "Better Like This" or "D’You Guys Wanna Fuckin’ Party After This? No" show clear influences from HOT WATER MUSIC. And indeed, the main focus is set on the target audience. In "Chub-E & Hank III Vimont Stories Part II", the backing vocals stand out particularly, coming out of the speakers with full force.
With that, one can confidently say that Canada has much more to offer than just Bryan Adams as a music export. "THE SAINTE CATHERINES" delivers well-thought-out, cleanly produced melodic punk rock that is enjoyable.
They may not reach the spearhead, but they are certainly in the upper third of the spear.
