What does one think when faced with the CD of a band called POINTERS HEAD, which translates to “The Head of the Arrow” or “To Hit the Nail on the Head”? With a punk band, one would hope for uncompromising lyrics, but what does that mean for a band that calls its style Heavy Rock?
Is this the best Heavy Rock ever played, or an essence of rock and heavy metal from the last decades?
The title “Worst Case Society” also brings to mind punk bands, but metal bands have similar names as well.
So, enough with the guessing games, let’s put the CD in the player and go.
After a recorded radio communication from flight 911, the song “The Unsung Heroes Part I” follows. The lyrics of the song leave me in awe; it’s not standard for rock to prioritize political lyrics over everything else, and the music pushes forward nicely. Great rock with ‘80s elements and some mosh parts. The headbanger is pleased, and his girlfriend enjoys the heavier sound, allowing her to feel a bit like a rock chick. On the other hand, almost everything has already been said about 911. So it’s no surprise that POINTERS HEAD doesn’t say anything new here, although what they do say isn’t wrong. The lyrics partially lean towards the Dritte Wahl song “Feige Helden”.
Let me just listen to the other songs.
I’ll spare you the details on each individual song; that would exceed the scope of the review. The following songs are still unusually socially critical and political for this sound. It’s the packaging that keeps surprising me.
Is a band really wrapping these lyrics in a mixture of rock and heavy metal?
It really is!
This makes the band quite unusual and, in my opinion, very worth listening to.
Anyone who enjoys this groovy ‘80s heavy metal and also likes rock should definitely give this album WORST CASE SOCIETY a try.
