Just in time for the Football European Championship, OLLI SCHULZ released the single "Spielerfrau".
Now that the European Championship is over and the Olympics are in full swing, I realize while listening to Mr. Schulz's song that it is indeed a football song, but not an EM song.
As the title suggests, it’s about a girl who has dedicated herself to football from a young age. However, not actively, but passively, as a girl behind the goal.
Wencke Myhre already dealt with the same theme in 1969 and created an evergreen for football fans with her song "Er steht im Tor".
OLLI SCHULZ approaches the topic in a much broader way; he presents the life of a player’s wife in his lyrics. A text that also shows that only fame and recognition, and even social decline, play a role. If you only finish in eighth place, that means no Champions League, and how are you supposed to dare to go to the stadium then? The only solution is to find a new player, sneak in the child, and then consider that as the life worth living. A lot of show, little substance, but when the cameras of the TV stations are around you while you stroke the heads of poor children from Africa, then it goes around the whole world. Whether the donation money actually arrives or makes a real impact doesn’t really matter anymore. You were on television. You are noticed and respected.
In under three minutes, OLLI SCHULZ paints a portrait that is honest and disillusioning but also imbued with his own unique charm. I even forgive him for apparently being a fan of HSV.
The B-side, which is the second song on the CD, comes with "Ich kenn' da Ein", a song on a completely different topic. Surely everyone knows people who know people that these people are proud of. The one who gets you into the club for free, who quickly organizes things for you, and somehow that boosts the ego. But if everyone knows everyone, then no one knows someone that the other doesn’t know. OLLI SCHULZ's wordplay, aptly formulated and precisely on point, puts a brake on all those people who pat themselves on the back because they know someone. Many people should take this song to heart.
People only talk about themselves, and when it comes to others, they don’t even listen. These egomaniacs, who are only satisfied when others look up to them, are something everyone has encountered at some point.
The single makes you crave more from the Hamburger who has been hanging around in the capital for a few years and calls it home.
The new album "S.O.S. - Save Olli Schulz" has been available since March 16, 2012, and includes many gems from the Hamburg native.
