Even though the name might suggest otherwise, the band PORNOPHON is not about sex, porn, or sexual freakiness. It may sound like it, but that's not the case.
PORNOPHON hails from Ulm, has been around for 15 years, and plays hardcore.
This album is, as the title suggests, their fifth.
The album features eight songs and a remix. One might think that's quite little for a hardcore band, as these bands usually blast through their songs in two minutes.
However, anyone looking at the playtime will quickly realize that the Ulmers take their time.
While the first song “Warcorde“ is a classic old-school hardcore song, the second song “Nothing“ is a slower, almost dragging track that could be described as a kind of hardcore doom. Technically well played, the song captivates the listener.
The pace picks up a bit, but the entire album is certainly more than just another good hardcore album. It undoubtedly has its roots in old-school hardcore, but also incorporates some influences from doom. There are also flashes of screamo, and if you listen closely, you might even catch a hint of good old punk.
I don't know why they chose the provocative name PORNOPHON. However, I do know that this album offers a lot musically and lyrically to the musically open-minded person.
Before anyone thinks the band actually plays post-something-core, let me say:
Buy the album,
engage with it,
listen to it loud
and you will realize that you own good music that is miles away from the modern noise that likes to call itself post…blah, blah, blah…
“Five“ is a demanding gem!
