Am I getting old or am I expanding my musical horizon?
Both!
There’s nothing I can do about getting older, but I can do something for my musical horizon. After diving into the new pieces by GREGORY PORTER, I was immediately fascinated by his powerful, strong, voluminous, yet very sensitive, almost fragile voice. GREGORY PORTER from Bakersfield, California, was exposed to gospel music early on, as well as the music of Nat King Cole.
With this music and various strokes of luck as well as setbacks in his life (he actually wanted to become a football player, but an injury ended his career early), he got the chance to showcase his vocal talent.
“Liquid Spirit“ is now the third album.
The first two albums by GREGORY PORTER received much acclaim. So it’s no surprise that the relevant press rushed to cover the third album from the man from Bakersfield.
GREGORY PORTER recorded this album with seven other musicians he has been making music with for years. This was a good, and as GREGORY PORTER sees it, also a logical decision, as a well-rehearsed team, in his opinion, achieves better results than a band thrown together with stars. With this thought, he was right. The fourteen songs sound seamless. They come out of the speakers organically and harmoniously. GREGORY PORTER's voice fits perfectly with it. The songs are tailor-made for the Bakersfield native. He gives them a fascinating character with his unique voice.
This release belongs to those that are made for the quiet hours of the day and night. One can, one must take time for the music. Then it develops an almost endless depth. The voice takes you on a journey that should never end. The lyrics are by no means born from a dreamy fantasy, but deal with very concrete themes. Of course, about love, as is often the case in soul, but they also address musical diversity (“Musical Genocide”) and freedom (“Moving”).
And again and again, this fascinating, powerful voice of GREGORY PORTER.
With some releases, I feel like I am holding something great in my hands; with “Liquid Spirit” by GREGORY PORTER, I am sure of it!
