OSTBRUT from Burg near Magdeburg were previously unknown to me, but that is set to change with "Blood Licked," the new album from the punk rock trio. Completely DIY produced and available for download for everyone’s ears, this piece is now ready, and it was important for the band to explore all possibilities to gain attention from the masses as an unknown band. By the way, the record is also available in a limited edition of 1000 copies in a cardboard sleeve. All of this already earns some points, as I believe it is not easy nowadays to survive as a DIY band or to get many gigs. For that reason alone, one should give it a listen and support the band. But now to the music: Oi-heavy street punk, combined with acoustic parts and a few more melodic inserts, provides a solid foundation. The band describes their sound as very melancholic, which I can now confirm. Musically, it’s not always my personal cup of tea, as it feels a bit too soft in some places. In certain corners, the record could definitely have more grit and street edge, but I think the band's style is intentional and will surely appeal to some. It’s all a matter of taste. The man at the microphone fits the sound very well and delivers it all very authentically. Lyrically, it revolves a lot around despair, disappointed love, and the like, but social criticism is also not neglected. According to the band, it is very important for them to process many of their own experiences in the songs. While I still miss the right punk rock anthem, the music does allow for some small comparisons to bands like DER DICKE POLIZIST or ZAUNPFAHL. All in all, it is produced in very good studio quality for a DIY production. And I think OSTBRUT is on a good path to further develop in the coming years.
