Does the Silver Surfer actually listen to surf music? If so, it could be the quirky space surf rock of THE BLIND SHAKE. This sound is as varied as the genre itself. The band cheerfully switches between purely instrumental pieces, where the guitar speaks, and garage stompers with distorted vocals. At times, you feel like you're in an Italian Western, only to be teleported back to a 50s B-movie with strange rumbling. Somehow, this reminds me a bit of WEEN. Not quite as bizarre, but with a general stylistic openness and a joy in experimenting with sounds. The album is diverse and keeps boredom at bay over its relatively short playing time. The fact that you can listen to it multiple times speaks to catchy songwriting, and the fact that some hooks stick in my head for days is just part of the deal. Thus, the music of THE BLIND SHAKE is nothing new, but rather old material well-prepared and varied. This is something I can personally be happy with.
