The year 2016 starts off with a treat! And this delicacy is called SPIRAL69 and comes straight from Rome via download to my hard drive. Unfortunately, once again only 10 MP3s without a booklet and decent promotional material. So I have to pull most of the information from the internet, if possible. Point deduction!
But to get straight to the point, otherwise, the 4th album (according to my research) of the three Italians has turned out to be an amazing dark, melancholic, hit-worthy album. Their mix of electronic and rock music reminds me from the very first second of the hit songs by DEPECHE MODE from the last 15 years, even though this British cult band is not mentioned in the promotional material of SPIRAL69 (but several other renowned bands like THE CURE and PLACEBO are). Aside from the fact that I prefer the old DEPECHE MODE songs from the 80s, SPIRAL69 doesn't simply copy the typical DEPECHE MODE sound of the third decade either. At the latest with the vocals, you can hear a clear difference. At least that's how it is for me with the first two songs "Your Halo," which at 6 ½ minutes is the longest track on the album, and "Liar."

The third song "No Mercy" is carved from a slightly different wood and reminds me in the first 60 seconds of the ballad "Where the Wild Roses Grow," by Nick Cave in duet with Kylie Minogue. An amazing song that is already 20 years old but has lost none of its charm. No wonder that "No Mercy" by SPIRAL69 also immediately appeals to me, until after 60 seconds the melody deviates a bit from NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS. But even "No Mercy" remains at a high level; this duet with... whoever it is, is damn cool!
The fourth song is again a bit different and shows how versatile SPIRAL69 are. "Ritual" strongly reminds me of NINE INCH NAILS, cool I love NIN ;-) While "XXX," the fifth song on "Second Chance" sounds more like a MARILYN MANSON song. This hits exactly on my dark taste nerve.

Even for the shortest track of the album, "Goodbye," which is 4 minutes long, I found a musical counterpart after listening to this great album countless times. But now while typing the review, I can't recall the band. The same goes for the seventh track "Second Chances," but maybe I'll remember it during the course of the review ;-) Some rock ballad.... Hmmm.....
With "Colors and Grey," it's harder to find a musical counterpart. Despite multiple listens... In the end, I settled on THE CURE, but with a decent portion of Future added to it ;-)
The only song I couldn't assign to a band was the 95% instrumental piece "The Art Of Losing Ground," except for two brief sentences towards the end.
And the tenth and final song "Nothing" reminded me again of NIN.

The fact is, during the 48 minutes of playtime, my thoughts wander to these mentioned great bands with their great songs while listening to the songs of SPIRAL69. And anyone who is measured against that and passes this test with flying colors would actually deserve the highest score.
But that is not the case for the reason mentioned at the beginning. Unfortunately....

P.S. Now I remember who "Goodbye" reminds me of, THE CRÜXSHADOWS, and "Second Chances" reminds me of MUSE!!!
