I must confess that the third album "In the Cafeteria There Were Beans..." by the young Berlin solo artist TOMAS TULPE did not appeal to me at first listen. The playful rhymes of the 14 songs with a TRIO-like sound mixed with a touch of electro-trash simply failed to penetrate my tough exterior.
During the NDW era, these songs would surely have been played between HUBERT KAH, DÖF, UKW, ERSTEN ALLGEMEINEN VERUNSICHERUNG, and TRIO on the ZDF hit parade, and the album would have sold millions. But that was exactly 35 years ago, in 1982, and not in 2017!
Moreover, the unflattering photos of TOMAS TULPE on and in the digipack, with tennis socks, sandals, shorts, and always grinning with his mouth wide open... no, that looks more than just bad, and even the good album title "In the Cafeteria There Were Beans..." with the corresponding visualization of the consequences on the digipack cover doesn't help.
But I have experienced it often that my opinion changes after the second, third, or fourth listen... or not... in this case, however, it was so... yes, I must confess that I am now really enjoying this album!!!
This simple yet melodic minimal music has now penetrated through my connective tissue and fascia into my bloodstream. And I even surprise myself by singing along to these "cheap" lyrics because they are so primitive and uncomplicated. I can even remember them, and they are wonderful to sing along loudly in the car, since no one else is listening anyway ;-)
These 37 minutes can definitely be the highlight of any party or blow it up, depending on the mood and alcohol level ;-)
However, I still can't give full marks, as the start of this love affair with TOMAS TULPE was simply too unharmonious.
A little anecdote to conclude, the first two albums by TOMAS TULPE "Hatschi!" and "How About Mustard?" were released on FRANK ZANDER'S label "Zett – Records"!
