“Come down it´ll be ok“
First, let's get into the groove.
JAYA THE CAT released a new album titled “A good day for the damned“ on November 17, 2017; it is their seventh album and right from the first song, it grooves like hell.
It’s this unique mix of styles that this band creates—Reggae, Punk, Blues, Dancehall, Hip Hop, and Punkrock—that captivates you while listening. Not just since this album, but since their first album. Geoff's vocal style gives the band an even stronger personal touch than the music already does. Rough, scratchy, and distinctive, it fits perfectly with the music. Sometimes, on the album, Geoff sounds as if he went straight to the studio after a night of heavy drinking and a strong coffee to record the songs. Especially “A rough Guide to the Future“ evokes this thought.
The song “Sweet Eurotrash“ shows that the band knows what it’s like to get up again after a night of partying. It shows, also with a video that has brought a smile to my face more than once. For those who haven't seen it yet, it can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGS-UcG33hg
The video also reminds me of a time when it was still warmer here and one could actually hang out outside without freezing.
Against the cold, there is the music. The album warms the heart. Even though it is by no means a “feel-good album.” Of course, the album is fun and relaxing, but the lyrics are not such that you can swing from one side to the other in a comfort hammock.
The band has been around for 22 years. They have experienced a lot, seen a lot, and have formed their thoughts. JAYA THE CAT are not primarily a political band, but they are good observers, and so during the relaxed listening of the CD, there are times when a grin feels out of place.
With this album, the band showcases the full range of their musical abilities. It may be the essence of 22 years with the knowledge that not everything today is better than it was before. Or was it the other way around? Regardless, it might even be a soundtrack for the generation that was once called “Easy-Jet-Set.”
Sweet Eurotrash, you look wonderful tonight...
