When a debut album takes off, it is always difficult to produce an adequate successor that is at least as good, or even better. Many second albums fail at this hurdle. And I must admit, the second album by DETLEF from Cologne doesn't quite make it either....
This is not to say that "Supervision" is merely mediocre or even bad, no. "Supervision" has quite a few hits, but there are also some B-side songs among the 19 (!!!!) tracks, which was not the case with their debut album "Kaltakquise" (see my review: https://www.ramtatta.de/s/reviews/f/details/id/8304/) exactly 2 years ago.
But let's take it step by step, the 3 DETLEFs are made up of ⅔ SUPERNICHTS (hence the new album title "Supervision" ?) and it is of course not their second record if you count the SUPERNICHTS era, but their tenth (???) or at least something like that, so they are already old hands in the punk rock business. And they know what the rabbit and the pepper are all about.
And so "Supervision" starts off quite explosively, even though the intro could have benefited from a few more voices, with "Tag des guten Lebens" about rural exodus, life in the big city, and delicious rhubarb, hmmmm......
In the second song "Würdest ihr bitte euer scheiß Maul halten?" there’s a roundhouse kick against everyone, also good.....,
but the first highlight of the album follows as the third track: "Ich hasse Kopenhagen obwohl ich noch nie da war", the lyrics are simply delightful... listen (watch) to the song on YouTube and you will understand me.
Also, "Ordnungsamt" (which is currently on everyone's lips) comes across very well.
In "Auge um Auge, Schnaps und Schnaps" it’s just begging to sing along with the chorus....
"Deutsche Männer" is the longest song on the album at 2:58 minutes and simply must be heard, amazing....
"Keine Zeit für Geld" and once again a song starts with a simple count-in via crash/hi-hat cymbals, which is quite noticeable (and there will be several more to come) and at 1:41 minutes it is one of the shorter songs and for me the first song for a B-side.
It’s different with "Kleiner Mann", musically top-notch, but lyrically a bit discriminatory towards dwarfs/little people/pygmies/broken giants of this world (good thing I don’t feel addressed with my 1.96m).
"Ein ganz normaler Freitag", my (and also DETLEF’s) normal daily routine on a Friday, very well put, only unfortunately, thanks to Corona, we currently have no normal Fridays :-(
"Casual Friday" as the tenth song, very cool, great lyrics (good thing I don’t have to wear a blazer at work, I still drink, blazer or not), awesome awesome awesome, only unfortunately way too short, at 1:07 minutes (the second shortest song).
"Alle gegen Alle" and "Eisbären" are good, but they can’t hold a candle to "Ich saufe häufiger als Du" (not just because of the sympathetic bass). Cheers.
Exploitedly, "Übergangsjacke" then hits you... bang bang bang to the face with a "Übergangsjacke", in less than 1 minute. Very cool.
And the next highlight bears the ambitious title "Wie kann man sich nur nicht für Fußball interessieren?" and points out the small (but significant) flaw in the lyrics, with "...our colors are white blue, Schalke and MSV...". Ouch ouch and that from the mouths of three Cologne residents. Ohhhh, actually a heavy, very heavy mistake or just a pity ploy? Both clubs are at the bottom of their league.....
"Da ist gar nichts" then drifts out as the 16th song (!) from the speakers..... Shalalala, a B-side for me.... A µ (pronounced "Mü") better is "Man muss fallen, wenn die Feste sind" and even better "F.I.C.K.E.N.", but the emotion somehow fell off for me starting from the 16th song and doesn’t come back up. Not even with the last song "Rooftop Bar".
The record just glides out after 37 minutes.... Every time! Even after the 15th listen.....
In this case, the rule of quality over quantity applies again, which does not mean that the last – B-side – songs are bad. They simply do not have the same quality and brilliance. On the other hand, one can say there are 14 bangers on the album (and the other 5 you just listen to every third time ;-) )
This time there is also no bonus point for the booklet. It is nicely done, but the lyrics are printed so small (dear DETLEFs, please think of the older listener/readership too).....
