THE RIPTIDES are releasing a new album.
THE RIP...who?
THE RIPTIDES were completely unknown to me until now.
The band is not easy to find online. One can easily stumble upon a former band from Australia that bore the same name.
THE RIPTIDES come from Ottawa, Canada. They have been around since 1998.
“Burn after Listening“ is the band's ninth album and references a film by the Coen brothers. Who doesn't know the great film “Burn after Reading“, featuring Brad Pitt in one of his most bizarre roles.
The band from Ottawa kicks off with “We came to destroy“. This is how punk should be, right from the start and no prisoners taken.
With track number 2 “Smile“ and the following “End of the world“, a sort of red thread becomes apparent.
How we deal with the world, how we deal with ourselves and with others is the overarching theme of the album.
I immediately fell in love with the 15 songs of the album.
THE RIPTIDES play a style that sits somewhere between NoFx and Pennywise. It’s melodic pop-punk rock, with choruses and plenty of drive. There are catchy melodies and fine singalongs.
Why has this band only just come across my path?
What THE RIPTIDES offer here is top-notch, melodic punk rock that doesn't need to hide from anyone.
Really, I’ve rarely heard such a fine piece of music from Canada.
