NOFX are indeed a creative band. During the recording sessions for their current album “Coaster“, five songs were left over that somehow didn’t fit on the album. So what to do with these songs? Instead of releasing them nicely with two or three singles, the band led by mastermind Fat Mike thought it would be a great idea to pack all the songs onto an EP and release it just in time for the Christmas shopping season. This way, something decent can also be placed under the tree for the rebellious child. While the entire family bubble sits drunkenly on the sofa with eggnog and mulled wine, the kids are pogoing under the Christmas tree.
For pogoing, the first two songs are perfectly suitable. “Cokie the Clown“ and the truly fantastic “Straight outta Massachusetts“ are two gems that you would expect from NOFX. Melodies with flow, catchy and danceable. If you want to throw a few more elbows, you will be very satisfied with the third song “Fermented and Flailing“. It gets harder here, but not less melodic. The song reminds me of the Dutch band De Heideroosjes in terms of its hardness and vocals. The Dutch have also been influenced by NOFX, so it all fits together.
The fourth song “Codependence Day“ is similar to song number 3, with the drums being more prominent here. The song, with its driving melody, is also fun again. Is everything funny on this EP?
Almost, because even clowns can be sad sometimes.
Song number five “My Orphan Year“ in its acoustic version really hits home. If you didn’t know that Fat Mike can also sing sensitively, then just for this song, I recommend buying this EP!
To everyone else, it should be noted that with “Cokie the Clown“ there is a great addition to “Coaster“. Vinyl lovers among you can look forward to a very special treat. The record is also available as a double 7“!! If that’s not a cool Christmas gift.
