JIM TWENTY come from Cologne-Mühlheim and have been around for almost 3 years. During this time, the combo has been very active, having released two records, one of which is “The Mission“, and also created their own style, Skacore, a mix of hardcore, emo, and ska.
Can you really mix those styles? That was my first question when reading the band info. Well, you can certainly mix a lot, but does it actually sound good?
For a band that has existed for three years, the songs are quite polished. Many breaks, tempo changes, partly multi-voiced singing, and screamo parts alternate with clean vocal parts, and if that’s enough for you, you can switch off now. The others will still get the ska parts thrown at them. The two brass players, Max and Stefan, add accents in the songs, but not much more. And just because the guitar occasionally plays an offbeat riff, it doesn’t automatically make it a ska piece.
The seven songs on “The Mission“ are technically very solid, but they actually remind more of emo than anything else. Those who are into this music will find in JIM TWENTY a band that technically delivers their songs with pressure and melody through the speakers.
However, for hardcore fans, the band can only be recommended to a limited extent, and ska is clearly the style that is least present in the songs. Calling the style Skacore is almost shameless.
