"If forgiveness is a virtue, then I certainly do not possess it. But nothing could matter less to me right now," are the opening lines of the debut album by "Der Rest" from Hamburg.
So if they excel at anything, it is definitely in musically and lyrically evoking a flood of melancholy that I haven't experienced since Kettcar and Tocotronic. The four musicians of "Der Rest" will release "The Table is Set" in early February, an album recorded and produced in their own studio, which is entirely in the spirit of feeling and emotion.
The ten-track album comes dressed in an acoustic garb of violins, piano, guitars, drums, percussion, and double bass, with the guitar(s) and drums taking the lead.
The lyrics, which do not follow any recognizable rhyme scheme, are by Philipp (Phil) Taraz and his sister Luisa, who here let their thoughts and feelings run free.
The vocals sometimes take center stage, while at other times, as in "Leaning Out the Window," they let the guitars speak more and approach things a bit faster and more rhythmically.
The whole will be released as a digipack in comic style, including a booklet with all the lyrics.
