THE HOWLING WOLFMEN from Dresden have been around since 2006. The howling wolfmen, or better said, the howling werewolves, are young men who have dedicated themselves to the old sound since the band's founding and released their debut album in 2011, which was available exclusively on vinyl. The old sound means for Mike, Eric, and Ave old-school Psychobilly and Neo-Rockabilly.
For readers who are not so familiar with the scene, this is a sound that consists of a shot of old-school Rock'n'Roll and a hefty dose of Brian Setzer or Stray Cats. Here and there, the energy of Psychobilly is added as an extra touch, and that's the sound of THE HOWLING WOLFMEN.
The trio from Dresden has already managed to play with scene giants like The Meteors, Demented Are Go, or Frenzy in their career. These are enormous names. They suggest that the Dresden musicians are not the worst. And indeed, they are not. What comes out of the speakers is the finest sound of the old school.
It's catchy Rock'n'Roll, infectious Rockabilly, sometimes a calmer sound that leans towards The Meteors, then again more aggressive Billy… it's fantastic.
It is fascinating that such young people create such cool old-school sound. Somehow, I keep thinking that this must be at least 30 years old, but it is not.
Currently, there are plenty of young bands that lean more towards Neo-Psychobilly and play it with enormous pressure and aggression. As the spearhead of this sound, Sir Psyko & his Monsters should be mentioned. So, completely contrary to the musical development of the scene, three guys from Dresden turn to the old sound and play it as if they have never played anything else, which is more than commendable.
It is very commendable that Halb 7 Records from Dessau is releasing this piece of music on CD, where quick action is advisable, as this beautiful piece in a digipack is strictly limited to 999 copies.
