Do you know the feeling of not being able to find the needle in the haystack and not seeing the forest for the trees? That's how I've felt for weeks with the fifth album of the Berlin punk rock band RADIO HAVANNA.... To be honest, this is my first album by the four guys, but their good reputation has reached my ears many times before. Not only have I heard about their musical qualities, but their political and social engagement has also been praised highly. I had to see this for myself, and I take my hat off to what they actively undertake! Respect!!!
But back to the new album "Unsere Stadt brennt", which is really great both musically and lyrically... There's nothing to criticize, and yet, there is something in some songs... But what is it??? What just doesn't sit right with me?
I'll start with the positive arguments or songs; for example, the third song "Raketen" is a banger... A three-minute earworm and 100% radio-friendly!!! Everything fits in this song, from the melody to the vocals, everything, okay the lyrics could be a bit longer, but never mind... Song 4 => "Kaputt", Terrorgruppe Archi Alert definitely had a hand in that. Terrorgruppe sends their regards => 100% awesome!!! And since I mention Archi, he and Andi Jung produced the album. In the fifth song "Dynamit", there's even a piano to be heard... and somehow the song reminds me of the Toten Hosen....
"Feuer"! Song No. 7 is definitely another good song... The three minutes invite you to nod along, cool and almost as radio-friendly as "Raketen".
In the eighth song "Unnormal", you can hear Archi again.... Or let's put it this way, Radio Havanna has oriented themselves a bit towards the good songs of Terrorgruppe with this track.
And now from Berlin and Düsseldorf to Ibbenbüren with the Donots... I don't mean to imply that Radio Havanna would consciously copy the sound of these bands, but "Geisterstadt" and "Komm zurück" (Tracks 9 and 10) have that typical Donots sound, and that's good!!!!
However, the 11th song "Sturm" unfortunately doesn't storm as expected, and the last song "Unsere Stadt brennt" doesn't really burn either. Both songs just drift along, but a hurricane only occurs in the last seconds of the final song. I miss a bang-up conclusion for the album.
For those who have been paying attention, you'll notice that I haven't written anything about the first two songs "Schiffbruch" and "Phantom", because this album not only lacks a bang-up conclusion, but it also lacks an impactful start. This is definitely not given with these two songs. Nevertheless, most of the songs are really good to very good, and after at least a dozen listens, I now know what I personally don't like, the needle in the haystack that I've been looking for. It's the voice of singer Fichti that I don't like. In most songs, this isn't so noticeable because the melodies or the background vocals harmonize with Fichti's voice. However, in a few songs, this is not the case, especially in the yet-to-be-mentioned song No. 6 => "Glasherz", where the thumb goes horizontal and even down for "Glasherz".
Conclusion: 2/3 of the 12 songs are great, 1/3.... well.... that's why there are only 7 points.
