"From Bohemia Comes the Music" by Peter Alexander! And the equally unforgettable Ernst Mosch, the most famous and beloved polka musicians forever! How do I know this? 14 years of brass and polka music - burdens from my paternal creator... ;-) Until I could finally buy my own HiFi system with my confirmation money, my realm, my records, my music... When I visit my personal creators today, hardly does the front door open, and I am still greeted by brass and polka music ;-)
The two composers are now in the folk music heaven, and with both feet in Berlin stand since 2002 their grandchildren POLKAHOLIX.... no, they are standing there with 12 feet, because there are 6 of them and they also let out some (punk) rock in their polka style.... However, I must admit that they haven't hopped across my path yet. After all, "Sex & Drugs & Sauerkraut" is already their 4th album and "Rattenscharf", their last release from 2013, was an EP.
I threw the imaginary CD into the player or put on the LP (!) (unfortunately, I only received the 13 songs as an MP3 download :-( ) and it blows me away! Amazing....
"Voll Polka" as the first track goes straight to the knee... as the lyrics beautifully say: "I want a polka that pushes, give me a polka that pushes, that's a polka that pushes, finally a polka that pushes" and the polka really pushes.... Awesome awesome awesome! Everything fits in this song: lyrics, voice, music, tempo... Thumbs way up and it stays there for now, because everything fits in the second track "Bequem" as well. Tempo, music, voice, lyrics.... Anyone who can sit still during this has no music in their blood...
"White Wedding" by BILLY IDOL, anyone who dares to cover such a hit can quickly get burned! And I must admit that I have only heard very few great cover versions of this hit, but this version by POLKAHOLIX is simply amazing! Top, it can't get better, at least not in their special music style....
Also, the fourth track "In Berlin" simply blows me away, everything fits perfectly together here... I love this song... And so far, POLKAHOLIX has achieved 12 out of 10 possible points!!! ;-)
But then.... I don't know why, but somehow the momentum is strangely gone starting from the fifth track "Polka Gambler". I can't quite explain it, but the class of the first 4 tracks is no longer present. Not that the following songs are bad, no, they are good, they are nice, but they are no longer as incredibly awesome as the first 4 songs. And that doesn't change even after I've listened to the album at least a dozen times. The first 4 songs blow me away every time, and the following songs are "only" quite good. Could it be that the songs have more English lyrics, like track 6 "Bang Bang" and 7 "Jalapeńo"? I don't think that's the reason, because even RAMMSTEIN's "Engel" doesn't blow me away as the second cover song on the album like "White Wedding" does. But I can't quite explain why that is.
It doesn't get better with "Wunderbar" and the third cover song "I was made for lovin you".
Strangely, the next two songs are again very close to the first four songs. With "The Fox" and "Zugabe", you can swing your hips almost as well as in the first 15 minutes of the album, which is 47 minutes long! But then my good mood every time takes a dive with the 13th, the last song "Amadeus" by FALCO. The version starts off quite well, but then just drags on slowly and boringly.... *yawn* ... even the reintroduction of the song after a pause doesn't help.
Conclusion => Sex & Drugs & Sauerkraut => 4 amazing songs, 2 really good songs, and the other half of the album is quite nice...
