In 2013, the third album by FRONT from Wiesbaden was released.
Now, after five years, album number 4 is coming out. The album was actually supposed to be released earlier, but due to a health-related break and a departure of a band member, it took longer than expected. My anticipation grew even more when I read that the new album by FRONT is finally set to be released.
The third album had greatly impressed me. It was edgy, biting, and dark in terms of lyrics, musically somewhere between Lo-Fi, NDW punk, and cold wave noise music. The new record continues where it left off in 2013. Wordplay, as well as the album title, is carried on, giving familiar words or phrases new meanings. This is also somewhat of a trademark of the Wiesbaden band.
“Dissonance and Madness” fits the title perfectly with the current state of the world, whether right outside the door or in distant lands.
What stands out immediately upon first listen is that the sound has become noisier and more chaotic. The vocals can no longer assert themselves against the sound and are thus harder to understand, which is quite unfortunate for a band like this. The lyrics, unfortunately only rudimentarily understandable even after multiple listens, are a part of the band and the songs. When they can no longer have an impact, something is missing.
What can be heard is bitter social criticism with a large dose of cynicism. Or is it more sarcasm? Is the suffering one laughing out of madness or pain?
The songs are still absolutely FRONT in terms of structure. You can hear the band, even if you don’t know what is currently spinning on the turntable. At least there is a certain recognition effect present.
Overall, “Dissonance and Madness” does not reach the heights of “Front” from 2013. The wait has only been partially worth it...unfortunately.
The good piece will be released as an LP, a tape, and as a download.
