Sometimes you are offered something and assume that it is not for you. This preconceived response, based on past experiences, is usually correct. Usually, but not always.
Sometimes you reach for the seemingly unsuitable anyway. After a brief try and taste, you realize that it is actually something quite interesting. That's how it went for me with this release.
“Warm Graves“ from Leipzig are releasing their second album “Ease“. It took seven years for this release to see the light of day. A lot can happen in seven years, to each of us. “Warm Graves“ processes these experiences in their songs, which is not always easy to grasp, as the vocals, or rather the words often delivered in spoken song in a fragmentary manner, do not always allow for an easy access when combined with the electronic sound. This brings us to the classification of the music. “Warm Graves“, led by composer Jonas Wehner, create electronic music, but far from the mainstream. It is a sound that I haven't heard in a long time and that reminds me of the electronic sound that played in clubs twenty years ago, where the subculture met. Somewhere between Cold Wave, New Wave, and Electro-Avantgarde. Today, it is more commonly referred to as Ambient and Drone. Musically similar, I would say, just with a different history.
The pieces have this cool distance that I know from Cold Wave, yet they still encourage you to lose yourself in them. To dance, to dream... to let go.
The nine songs not only form the album but are also so well connected in their transitions that what is released here is more of a large, long piece than nine standalone songs. Listening does not get boring; on the contrary. The more I listen to the music, the more nuances I notice, the warmer the music becomes, the more it captivates me.
A surprisingly good release for me, which I, as an outsider—because I am by no means an expert in this field—consider to be very good. And if an outsider says this, what do the connoisseurs say?
