What do you do when you are attacked by a person with a banana?
This question is part of a sketch from the film “The Meaning of Life” by Monty Python and also part of the series “Monty Python's Flying Circus”.
Apparently, the man on the cover of KEEGAN's sixth album doesn’t know what to do, otherwise he wouldn’t be giving money to the woman who is robbing him.
Learning from Monty Python means being able to defend yourself.
Until now, I was unfamiliar with KEEGAN from Cologne, and I wonder why.
KEEGAN plays a captivating sound on this, their sixth album, which I would place somewhere between power pop, melodic punk rock, and '77 punk with a healthy dose of fun.
Maybe it’s the city, but listening to them always reminds me of the legendary Yeti Girls from Cologne. They might have had even more fun-punk and power pop in their style and usually sang in German (except for their early releases), but overall, Yeti Girls are a fitting and certainly not a bad reference.
The music sounds fresh, even though KEEGAN consists of seasoned men who have been making music together for a long time. Still, that’s the fascinating part: the sound, especially the vocals, makes it seem as if the band has an average age of 30. They probably have been 30 for 10 or 20 years.
Although the album was created in a curious way, singer Ian was in Northern Ireland during the Corona lockdown between February and May 2020. What do you do when you have nothing to do and are healthy? You work on new songs. That’s exactly what Ian did, resulting in 50 songs, of which 11 made it onto the album. Interestingly and truly fascinating is that in this special situation, the songs do not carry the heaviness and confusion inherent to the situation, but rather sound like a call to sing loudly, be happy, smile, and forget your worries.
With “Daylight Robbery”, KEEGAN has created an album that surprised me greatly. “Daylight Robbery” makes everyday life a little brighter, and I’m glad to have received this album, as it makes the last gray winter days more bearable.
Let’s see if KEEGAN can manage to go on a tour or play individual concerts this year that take them beyond the Cologne area.
Personally, I would love to see the band live in Berlin.
