Promoted as a brilliant fusion of hardcore and death metal, the debut album by RED I FLIGHT was released in March. So I'm still sitting here, and if I were to leave my stool, it would only be to change the music. It's hardcore, it's death, and if you wanted to fill the genre box, it's also new metal. But it's not brilliant; none of the 10 songs are. The 5 guys from Detroit play pretty cool hardcore, which they then ruin with death parts. At the most impossible moments – whenever it starts to appeal to me – they throw it away. Or is it just me, and am I seeing it wrong? Perhaps the fast H is ruining the D here? I like both when it's good, but a mix should be done skillfully. And that's simply not the case here. No question, there are crisp breaks offered that, once heard, you find again and again. This runs like a red thread throughout the entire album and quickly makes things boring. Live, the guys are really taking off. Let's hope they deliver better live than on record. The few bright spots that the album offers are not enough for me.
